ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improvement in the filtration of molten metal using a removable filter plate disposed in a filter chamber wherein the peripheral surface of the filter plate mates with the wall surface of the filter chamber. The peripheral surface of the filter plate is provided with an intumescent resilient seal such that the heat from the molten metal being filtered and/or preheating causes the intumescent resilient seal to swell thereby providing a positive seal for the filter plate in the filter chamber so as to prevent metal leakage around and/or floating of the filter plate.
