In the case or continuous casting or a metallic piece by the use of the continuous casting apparatus provided with a stopper (28) for con- trolling a quantity of molten metal flowing into the mold, fluctuation qw in flow quantity or molten metal, which flows into and out from the mold (18), caused by external disturbance is estimated from at least pre- ceding two values among a measured value L or the level of molten me- tal in the mold (18), a measured value x or command value Pr or the po- sition or said stopper (28), and a measured value V or casting speed. Estimation or flow quantity fluctuation qw is conducted in such steps that, for example, a measured value x of the position or the stopper (28) is inputted to a process model representing fluctuations in molten metal level and time-dependent variations in external disturbance, the differ- ence between an estimated value L or the molten steel level obtained from a model and a measured value L is fed back to said model and both values are made equal to each other, and the difference between es- timated value L or the molten metal level and measured value L ob- tained during the process or the computation is integrated. Then, an op- erating quantity c of said stopper (28) required for compensating for the estimated flow quantity fluctuation qw (external disturbance) is found and, by operating said stopper (28) on the basis or said quantity c, a le- vel of molten metal is controlled to be constant all the time.
