ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is provided for preparing briquettes comprising molybdenum or a mixture of molybdenum and iron, said briquettes being of such density as to be capable of penetrating steel slags. The process is a two-stage process in which molybdenum trioxide is reduced at about 500° - 650°C to molybdenum dioxide and the molybdenum dioxide or a mixture molybdenum dioxide and iron oxide is reduced at about 800 - 900°C to metallic molybdenum or a mixture of metallic molybdenum and iron. Gaseous hydrogen as hydrogen per se or in the form of dissociated ammonia is the reducing agent.
