A method of monitoring a coating applied to a metal surface is disclosed. Specifically, the method comprises the following: applying a sol composition to a metal surface, wherein said composition contains one or more alkoxysilyl group containing compounds, a fluorophore, and a solvent; forming a gelled coating on said surface from said composition; measuring the fluorescence of said coating with a fluorometer, wherein said fluorometer is capable of measuring reflective fluorescence emission measurements; correlating the fluorescence of said coating with the thickness or weight of said coating, and/or with the concentration of alkoxysilyl group containing compound in the coating composition; and optionally applying an additional coating to said metal surface when the thickness of the coating is less than a desired amount or adjusting the concentration of the alkoxysilyl group containing compound applied to said surface.
L'invention concerne un procédé de surveillance d'un revêtement appliqué sur une surface métallique. De façon précise, le procédé comprend les étapes suivantes consistant à : appliquer une composition de sol sur une surface métallique, ladite composition contenant un ou plusieurs composés contenant un groupe alcoxysilyle, un fluorophore, et un solvant; former un revêtement gélifié sur la surface à partir de ladite composition, mesurer la fluorescence dudit revêtement avec un fluorimètre, ledit fluorimètre pouvant mesurer des mesures d'émission de fluorescence réflective; mettre en corrélation la fluorescence dudit revêtement avec l'épaisseur ou le poids dudit revêtement et/ou avec la concentration de composé contenant un groupe alcoxysilyle dans la composition de revêtement; et appliquer facultativement un revêtement supplémentaire sur ladite surface métallique lorsque l'épaisseur du revêtement est inférieure à une quantité souhaitée, ou ajuster la concentration du composé contenant un groupe alcoxysilyle appliqué sur ladite surface.
