"MONITORING ELECTROPHORETIC MOBILITY OF BITUMEN IN HOT WATER EXTRACTION PROCESS PLANT WATER TO MAXIMIZE PRIMARY FROTH RECOVERY" ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention has to do with the hot water extraction process for recovering bitumen from oil sands. More particularly, the addition of alkaline process aid to the process is adjusted, in response to measurements of the electrophoretic mobility of the bitumen in the process water, to maintain said mobility at the maximum negative value. In this condition, the process yields maximum primary bitumen froth recovery. The improvement provides a guide for adjusting the hot water process by process aid addition variation, so as to cope with the difficulties caused by the variability of the nature of the oil sand feed.
