An apparatus and method are disclosed for monitoring a liquid filled pipe by ultrasonic techniques. It suggests the use, on a vehicle capable of fitting inside the pipe, and of being transported there along by the liquid flowing therewithin, of rings each of several ultrasonic transducers preferably disposed at equidistance circumferentially therearound, the rings being so arranged that one ring of transducers operates in the reflection mode purely radially while two rings of transducers operate as a pair in a longitudinal refraction mode. The vehicle is associated with power supply means, data gathering means and data storage capability, and a means for measuring the distance travelled along the pipe.

On décrit un appareil et un procédé utilisant des techniques ultrasonores pour surveiller une conduite remplie de liquide. Selon l'invention, un instrument pouvant être installé à l'intérieur de la conduite pour y être transporté par l'écoulement liquide est équipé de plusieurs anneaux de transducteurs ultrasonores disposés en cercle, de préférence à des emplacements équidistants. Les anneaux sont arrangés de sorte qu'un anneau de transducteurs fonctionne en mode à réflexion purement radial tandis que deux anneaux de transducteurs fonctionnent en paire en mode de réfraction longitudinal. L'instrument est couplé à un moyen d'alimentation, un moyen de collecte de données, un moyen de stockage de données et un moyen pour mesurer la distance parcourue le long de la conduite.
