Abstract A monitoring relay having a relay contact comprising a magnetizable element and urged by spring means into a rest position establishing a first electrical path through the relay, the relay contact being movable against the action of the spring means from its rest position into a working position establishing a second electrical path through the relay. The relay further- more has a relay winding operable to move the relay contact into its working position and connectable in a main circuit which is to be monitored for chang- es in current, the arrangement being such that the first electrical path is connectable in the monitoring circuit for registering a drop in current in the main circuit, and the second electrical path being connected in parallel with the relay winding. Preferably the contact is a magnetizable ball.
