INVENTION: MONITORING SYSTEM INVENTOR: ISAAC RAPOPORT ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of detecting the presence of an object in a supervised area is described. The method involves generating a pulsed ultrasonic signal with an acoustic signal generator, and directing the signal towards the supervised area. detector spaced a short distance from the generator is used to detect reflected signals produced in response to the ultrasonic signal, and a level signal indicative of the intensity of the detected signals is generated. The level signal is compared with a threshold signal during a pre- determined time interval corresponding to the expected travel time range of signals reflected from the supervised area, and when the threshold signal is exceeded, a signal indicating the presence of an object is generated. Cross-talk between signal generator and detector which might otherwise trigger an indicating signal is effectively eliminated by increasing the threshold signal during the predetermined time interval following each sound pulse to correspond to the expected magnitude of the cross-talk. A detection system embodying the method is also described.
