A monoclonal antibody which specifically binds to an antigen on the membrane of mitochondria in apoptotic cells. The antigen is a 38 kD protein that is detectable in cells undergoing apoptosis and undetectable in normal cells. This selectivity of the monoclonal antibody provides a method of distinguishing between normal and apoptotic cells in a sample of human hemopoietic cell populations. A method for detecting and measuring cells undergoing apoptosis is also provided.

La présente invention concerne un anticorps monoclonal qui se lie de façon spécifique à un antigène présent sur la membrane de mitochondries dans des cellules en apoptose. Cet antigène est une protéine de masse moléculaire de 38 kDa que l'on décèle dans les cellules en apoptose mais que l'on ne décèle pas dans les cellules normales. Dans un échantillon de populations de cellules hématopoïétiques d'origine humaine, cette sélectivité de l'anticorps monoclonal permet de faire la distinction entre cellules normales et cellules en apoptose. L'invention concerne également un procédé de détection et d'évaluation des cellules en apoptose.
