NOVEL MONOLITHIC FRONT SURFACE MIRROR Abstract of the Disclosure A monolithic front surface mirror is disclosed which achieves greater than eighty percent reflectance of visible light. In one preferred embodiment, a metal film is deposited onto a substrate. Thereafter, a low refractive index dielectric layer is deposited onto the metal layer followed by a high refractive index dielectric layer. A final protective dielectric layer may be deposited to increase overall durability. The metal, dielectric, and protective layers of the inventive front surface mirror are deposited by the sputtering process using a rotating cylindrical magnetron.
