ABSTRACT A precast foundation unit, having an upper block- like portion with a flat upper surface on which the monument base may be secured. Integral sidewalls project downwardly from each side of the upper portion by a suitable distance, which distance may be varied to suit local frost conditions. Preferably, an integral bottom piece connects the sidewalls at the bottom thereof. The upper portion, sidewalls and bottom piece thus together define a generally rectangular foundation unit, with a hollow central area which is intended to be back-filled. Preferably, there is a cross-piece between the two sidewalls roughly halfway down, to lend greater structural strength and to aid further in anchoring the foundation unit in the ground. - 13 -
