ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A mortise lock including a housing adapted to be recessed into the free end of a door having an outside and an inside side including a dead bolt slidably mounted in the housing for movement between a retracted position and an extended position, the deadbolt having a recess therein defining opposed front and rear surfaces, a latch bolt slidably mounted in the housing between an extended position and a retracted position, a mortise cylinder adapted to be mounted to the housing and rotated by a key from the outside side of the door, the mortise cylinder having a cam thereon adapted to act to operate the dead bolt, a latch bolt lever pivotally mounted to the housing adapted to be contacted by the cylinder cam on one end thereof and act on the latch bolt at the other end thereof, a follower member pivotally mounted to the housing adapted to be engaged by the cylinder cam, the follower member having a driving portion extending into the recess in the dead bolt and adapted to contact the front and rear surfaces to extend and retract the dead bolt, the follower member having a socket adapted to receive a shaft therein from a turning device on the inside side of a door whereby the deadbolt may be extended and retracted from the inside side of the door, a thumbpiece lever pivotally mounted within the housing adapted to act on the latch bolt ant retract the latch bolt, the thumbpiece lover being accessible through an opening in a bottom wall of the housing to be engaged by a lever or handle on the outside of the door to rotate the thumbpiece lever and cause it to retract the latch bolt, a toggle mechanism pivotally mounted to the housing and having two operative positions and including a slide member slidable in the housing between a first position to prevent pivotally movement of the thumbpiece lever and a second position to permit pivotal movement of the thumbpiece lever to retract the latch bolt, and an egress lever pivotally mounted to the housing about a socket member adapted to receive a shaft of a turning device extending from the inside side of the door, the egress lever having a portion adapted to contact the latch bolt and a portion adapted to act on the dead bolt whereby the egress lever may be pivoted from the inside side of the door to retract both the deadbolt and the latch bolt.
