ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A refrigeration motor compressor of the hermetically sealed reciprocating piston type is disclosed incorporating (a) a stator and compressor, each independently directly supported by the outer shell, which also retains the compressor components in assembled relationship; b) a unique drive arrangement which enables the compressor to be reduced in size to allow it to be housed in a circular shell no larger than that required to accommodate the motor stator; c) an improved discharge muffler arrangement wherein the discharge muffler is integrated with an end portion of the shell and remote from the driving motor; and (d) an improved lubrication system wherein in one embodiment a pressure responsive valved vent is provided for the substantially closed crankcase and operates to create a pressure differential between an oil sump and the upper end of an oil distribution passage, and in another embodiment a rotating valved vent is provided which operates to selectively place the upper end of the oil distribution passage in cammunication with the crankcase. Methods of assembly are also disclosed.
