ABSTRACT In a machine including a d.c. power supply having an output voltage, wherein the supply has a positive terminal and a common terminal, wherein the machine includes a d.c. motor, and wherein the motor has a first terminal and a second terminal, there is provided a apparatus for controlling the speed of the motor. The motor controlling apparatus comprises: the output voltage of the d.c. supply being a rectified and unfiltered output voltage; a silicon controlled rectifier having an anode and a cathode and a gate, the anode connected to the positive terminal of the power supply; structure for supplying a reference voltage to the gate of the rectifier; apparatus for connecting the cathode of the rectifier to the first terminal of the motor; and apparatus for connecting the second terminal of the motor to the common terminal of the power supply.
