2073438 9111052 PCTABS00006 A motor controller (10) for a single or multiphase induction motor (51) with control loop (59a, 59b, 59c) including auxiliary winding (61), capacitor (63) and saturable reactor (65). Auxiliary winding (61) is electro-magnetically coupled to stator winding (53, 55, 57) so the capacitive reactance of control loop (59a, 59b, 59c) is in parallel with the magnetizing reactance and the rotor leakage reactance of motor (51). The control loop (59a, 59b, 59c) is devoid of any direct electrical connection to motor (51). By varying the magnitude of current in D-C control winding (69), the inductance of reactor (65) is adjusted so the capacitive reactance of control loop (59a, 59b, 59c), as electro-magnetically reflected into motor (51), is in resonance with the parallel combination of the magnetizing reactance and the rotor leakage reactance. Adjustment of reactor inductance, and of the capacitive reactance of control loop (59a, 59b, 59c), may be stepwise or continuous, either instance dependent on motor speed or applied frequency. The magnitude of the motor current is maintained or even reduced even though output torque is increased.
