Abstract In a motor-driven reciprocating piston compressor, particularly for hermetically encapsulated small refrigerators, starting relief is provided with the aid of a throttling connecting passage (30). This connecting passage extends from a chamber (22) on a pressure side and can be closed by a stop valve (26) controlled in response to temperature. Its temperature responsive setting element (28) is arranged in a chamber (22) on the pressure side. The stop valve (26) closes when the compressed gas temperature exceeds a predetermined value. In particular, the setting element may be a bimetallic element (28).
