A step switch for step transformers has a motor drive with a driving unit and an information unit. Whereas the driving unit contains in a manner known per se the driving motor and its con- trol that actuates it depending on the direction of the rotation, the information unit contains, according to the invention, the follow- ing means: a sensor for detecting the absolute value of the instant position of the step switch; non-volatile storage means for the step position; non-volatile storage means for the position of the step switch within a step position range; means for recognizing an end position of the step switch; programmable means for storing spe- cific step switch data; serial data processing electronic means; electronic means for controlling and monitoring the switching pro- cess and an electric connection with the regulator and other dis- play, operation and control means that consists of a single serial data line.
