Abstract A feedback system, for controlling the speed of a fluid motor having a fluid motor input, includes an optical-signal transmitter, an optical-signal receiver, an optically sensitive marker provided on the motor to couple the transmitter to the receiver intermittently as the motor rotates and provide an output signal indicative of motor rotation. A converter processes the output signal to provide a fluid signal which is fed back to the motor input. A mechanism is provided for braking the motor from an overspeed condition when the output signal exceeds a preselected value.
