A device which allows the controllable attenuation of the signal strength of an optical signal as the optical signal passes through the device. This is done by passing the optical signal through two optical fibers which are separated by an air gap. The size of the air gap between the fibers controls the attenuation of the signal being passed - the larger the gap, the lesser the amount of optical signal being passed.
