ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A mould for the continuous casting of metals is formed with sections having different tapers so as to match the peripheral contraction of the mould to contraction of the metal being cast at different stages of the casting process. In an intermediate section of the mould in which the metal forms a peripheral shell, a peripheral contraction is applied which is preferably about 30 - 40% of the shrinkage of the metal on freezing, whilst a considerably more gradual taper is applied in an exit section.
