An improved chock for use by rock climbers. The applicant's chock has opposed pairs of broad and narrow working surfaces to enable insertion of the chock into cracks in rock formations of varying widths. Each of the opposed pairs of working surfaces includes a cylindrically convex camming surface and an oppositely disposed dual- lobed surface consisting of a pair of cylindrically convex portions separated by a shallow transverse groove. In one embodiment of the invention, the chock has a variable- depth slot formed on one external surface for receiving a spring-loaded roller.
