An installation system for mounting outdoor lighting wherein there is provided a foundation member in the form of a mildly compressible pipe member which is mounted in the ground, and an adapter on which a light standard is attached. The adapter has a lower portion, at least a portion of the outer surface of which is a section of a sphere for close reception in an open upper end of the pipe member. The adapter within the pipe member provides adjustment movement in a ball and socket fashion so that regardless if the pipe member is not accurately installed in the ground, the adapter can be moved to achieve vertical orientation of the light standard prior to clamping of the pipe member to prevent further relative movement between the standard and its foundation member.
