ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An injection pump assembly for an internal combustion engine includes a pump housing having at least one mounting bore extending thereinto from a surface thereof, and a respective injection barrel located at a mounted position in each mounting bore for housing a respective pumping piston in one end thereof and a respective valve means in the other end thereof. Each injection barrel includes at least one annular seat formed in the external periphery thereof and a respective annular seal in the seat. The annu- lar seal normally projects radially outward beyond the external periphery of the injection barrel axially adjacent to the seat when uncompressed. The annular seal is compressed by radial engagement with the wall of the mounting bore when the injection barrel is in the mounted position in the bore. In accordance with the invention, the mounting bore is chamfered to a di- ameter sufficiently small for engagement with the annular seal when the injection barrel is at the mount- ed position. The diameter of the bore between the housing surface and the chamfer is always greater than the diameter of the annular seal when uncompressed, thereby to prevent shaving the annular seal during axial displacement of the injection barrel into or out of its mounted position.
