ABSTRACT For the fixing of a plate cooler to the inner face of a metallurgical furnace, protective tubes are arranged to surround coolant tubes where the tubes pass through the furnace jacket and are cast into the body of the cooler. The protective tubes are provided externally of the furnace jacket with holding plates or discs. In one horizontal plane of the plate cooler, at least one protective tube is constructed as a fixed mounting, while the remaining protective tubes at that level are constructed as horizontally displaceable mountings to enable compensation for thermal expansion of the cooler. In another horizontal plane and opposite to the fixed mounting, at least one protective tuba is constructed as a vertically displaceable mounting, while the other protective tubes at this level are constructed as mountings displaceable both vertically and horizontally. The openings in the jacket for passage of the coolant tubes are sealed against escape of gas.
