An overhead roll door includes a breakaway guide follower having a first part attached to a raising and lowering mechanism and a second part attached to the door. The first part defines a pivotable latch plate having a slot therein, and the second part of the guide follower defines a pin received in the slot. A detent mechanism resists rotation of the latch plate out of a retaining position, in which the first and second retaining elements are held together, to a release posi- tion, in which the second retaining element is allowed to move transversely with respect to the first retaining element to allow the door to breakaway in response to an impact.
