ABSTRACT The invention concerns a coin validation system which may operate with a moving coin without the need to stop movement of the coin for measurement. The system includes a coin runway, two coils positioned adjacent the runway, two resonant circuits each coupled to a respective coil and first and second signal monitoring means for each resonant circuit arranged to monitor oscillating signals generated in the respective resonant circuit as the coin moves down the runway. The coils are spaced upstream and downstream by a known distance to provide an instantaneous velocity and acceleration independent measurement of the property of the coin being tested, e.g., its diameter. By comparing monitored signals it is possible to determine how far one of the upstream coil is the trailing edge of the coin and how far out of the downstream coil is the leading edge of the coil. It is then possible to calculate a parameter dependent of said property of the coin for validation.
