A rotary mower wheel shield comprises a disc of resilient material. The disc defines an aperture substantially in a center thereof, sized such that a mower wheel axle extending through the aperture frictionally engages walls of the aperture, thereby allowing the disc to be placed onto the axle to be held in place on the axle by friction between the disc and the axle, while allowing the disc to slide along the axle in response to a force exerted on the disc by material such as wire or weeds wrapping around the axle.
