A MRI method that employs cylindrical coordinates uses an elongated catheter (40) which is asociated with an RF pulse transmitting antenna and an RF pulse transmitting body coil (37). Circumferential phase encoding is accomplished by applying an intial RF pulse from either the catheter antenna (40) or the body coil (37) and subsequently applying an initial series of RF pulses with the source alternating between the antenna and the body coil.
