DNA probes for detecting a tandemly-repeated nucleotide sequence in the gene encoding mucin glycoprotein expresed by mammalian epithelical cells are provided. The invention comprises antibodies against human mucin core protein which do not react with a fully processed human mucin glycoprotein. They are useful in the diagnosis and localisation of breast cancer as well as in therapeutic methods.
