A valve for retaining drilling fluid when a drill string is disconnected from the drive mechanism. The valve has a valve body defining a central fluid passage. The fluid passage has a constriction which forms a seat for a ball. The ball is raised and lowered by a lift rod that engages the upper end of a drill pipe.
