ABSTRACT A sound attenuating muffler of the type used in the exhaust gas systems of motor vehicles is provided with a round cross section. The invention provides a frame that can be inserted into a round tubular muffler housing to subdivide the interior of the housing into a plurality of interconnected parallel gas flow paths that extend longitudinally of the housing and define a triflow or retroverted gas passage connecting the inlet at one end of the muffler housing to the outlet at the other end of the housing. The resulting muffler has a light weight, is compact, durable and acoustically efficient.
