A lawnmower having a deck which includes a volute-shaped cutting chamber having a precisely varying cross-sectional shape and area to provide even finer mulching of vegetation clippings, such as grass clippings, prior to the clippings either being redirected back into the ground or blown out through an exhaust chute of the mower. The volute cutting chamber includes an upper/outer corner portion having a first radius at a start point thereof. This radius increases until the entire volute cutting chamber, when viewed in cross-section, takes on a second radius of curvature larger than the first radius of curvature when a second point approximately 90° from the start point is reached. The second radius of curvature is maintained generally constant about the volute cutting chamber until a third point is reached approximately 135° of rotational travel past the second point. At the third point the radius of curvature of the upper/outer corner begins to decrease until the start point of the volute is again reached. The overall height of the volute, as well as the height of the inner lip portion of the volute, are controlled such that the height of the volute decreases from a predetermined maximum at the start point to a predetermined minimum at the first point. The height remains generally constant until the third point of rotational travel about the volute is reached, at which time the overall height begins to increase. Generally uniformly until the start point is again reached. The overall height of the inner lip of the volute further "tracks" the changing overall height of the volute.
