MULTI-COLOR ACOUSTOOPTIC DEFLECTOR Abstract of the Disclosure A method and device for deflecting a plurality of optical wavelengths impinging on an acoustooptic cell, which exhibits an anisotropic diffraction mode, to form a composite output beam by generating in the cell a variable frequency acoustic shear wave having a frequency component associated with each optical wavelength. Each acoustic shear wave component has (1) a center frequency approximately equal to the inflection point frequency of the respective optical wavelength, (2) a bandwidth chosen such that the diffracted light of each optical wave- length outside the composite output beam is a predetermined amount less intense than the diffracted light of each optical wavelength within the composite beam and (3) minimum and maximum frequencies such that the angles of deflection of light of each wavelength are substantially equal. -1-
