A multi-compartment pack with a fastening means that fastens together separate compartments The fastening means includes a first upper portion on a first upper compartment, a second lower portion on a second lower compartment, a third transverse portion which is substantially perpendicular to the first upper portion and second lower portion and a fourth portion on a strap. The fastening means includes three mating pairs: (i) the first upper portion and the second lower portion, (ii) the third transverse portion and the fourth portion, and (iii) the second lower portion and the fourth portion. The first and second compartments are fastened together by engaging the first upper portion and the second lower portion. In other modes, the first upper portion and the second lower portion may be disengaged and the second compartment carried independently using the strap, The strap functions as a shoulder strap or handle when the second lower portion is engaged with the fourth portion, and as a waist strap when the third transverse portion is engaged with the fourth portion. The multi-compartment pack preferably has two fastening means respectively located on opposite sides of the pack. The upper compartment is preferably a knapsack and the lower compartment is preferably a thermally insulated container.
