Abstract of the Disclosure A multi-channel decoder includes filter means responsive to an input waveform defining time spaced-apart multi- frequency signals, and includes jitter detecting means in each channel. According to a particularly advantageous feature, the filter means comprises a separate band-pass filter for each channel, and substantial noise immunity is achieved as a result of the combined effects of the band-pass filters and the jitter detecting means. The band-pass filter for each channel sub- stantially attenuates both wide-band noise and the out-of- channel signal frequency components of the waveform. Each jitter-detecting means in operation indicates whether the respective filtered signal has edge jitter in excess of a pre- determined jitter tolerance. It does so in response to a digital signal produced by a time-range quantizer in the channel such that the digital signal, in synchronism with the filtered signal, gives information as to the period of the filtered signal. During intervals in which each of the filtered signals has, as a result of such factors as the presence of voice frequency components and the like, as average frequency that could be mistaken for a mult-frequency signal component, the jitter detecting means detects the accompanying relatively substantial edge jitter or phase modulation of the waveform so as to preclude the decoder from making a false detection. Out- putting means provide for indicating the occurrence of substantially jitter-free detection for at least a predetermined interval of time.
