Abstract A multi-groove and spline connection (7) is provided between a gear (4) and a cardan shaft (8) of a rotary piston machine with internal axis. External toothing (11) at the head (9) of the cardan shaft (8) engages in internal toothing (15) of the gear (4). At least one step (21) forms an abutment. The step (21) extends centrally of the width of the gear (4) from the peak of the spline or the base of the groove of the internal toothing (15). The steps may be produced by cold deformation or by hollowing out part of the internal toothing by turning. Fig. 2.
