MULTI-LAYER COATING FOR METAL-CUTTING TOOLS ABSTRACT A multi-layer coating for metal-cutting tools con- sists of alternating layers of two components. One of the components is a nitride or, carbide of a metal of Group IV. The second component is a nitride, or carbide, or boride, or silicide of a metal of Group VI. The thickness of the layer of a compound of the metal of Group IV is within the range of from 0.05 to 0.5 ?µm, while the thickness of the layer of a compound of the metal of Group VI is equal to 15-40% of the thickness of the layer of the compound of Group IV metal.
