A magnetic marker or tag is disclosed which comprises (a) a first magnetic material characterised by high permeability, low coercivity and a non-linear B-H characteristic; and (b) a second magnetic material which is capable of being permanently magnetised, said first and second magnetic materials being superimposed one on the other and advantageously being substantially coterminous. The second magnetic material is preferably of medium coercivity. Selected regions of said second magnetic material can carry magnetisation such as to magnetically divide the first magnetic material into a series of magnetically discrete zones, the length of said magnetically discrete zones and/or the lengths of said magnetised regions ("gaps") of said second material constituting elements of a code.

Cette invention concerne un marqueur ou une étiquette magnétique, lesquels comprennent les éléments suivants: (a) un premier matériau magnétique qui possède une perméabilité élevée, une faible coercivité et une caractéristique B-H non linéaire; et (b) un second matériau magnétique qui peut être magnétisé de manière permanente. Le premier et le second matériau magnétique sont superposés et, de préférence, coïncident globalement l'un avec l'autre, le second matériau magnétique possédant de préférence une coercivité moyenne. Des zones prédéterminées du second matériau sont porteuses d'une magnétisation qui permet de diviser le premier matériau de manière magnétique en une série de zones discrètes sur le plan magnétique. La longueur de ces zones discrètes et/ou les longueurs des régions magnétisées ("espaces") du second matériau forment les éléments d'un code.
