A multi-layer metal gasket for an internal combustion engine having a first plate (14) having a major surface, a return (20) defining a combustion opening (30) and a flange (22), a second plate (16) defining an annular opening (40) adjacent the return (20) and lying between the flange (22) and the major surface of the first plate, a first annular embossment in the major surface of the first metal plate and having a projection extending towards the flange (22) and lying within the vertical projection of the flange, and a second annular embossment (42) in the second plate (16), the second embossment (42) defining a second projection and a recess, the second projection extending towards the flange (22), with the recess nestingly receiving the projection of the first embossment (24), and the confronting surfaces of the first projection and the recess being substantially coincident throughout, with the first and second embossments being entirely disposed between the return and the flange and lying within the vertical projection of the flange.

Garniture métallique multicouche pour un moteur à combustion interne, présentant une première plaque (14) pourvue d'une surface principale, une partie retournée (20) définissant un orifice (30) servant à la combustion et un collet (22), une seconde plaque (16) définissant une ouverture annulaire (40) adjacente à la partie retournée (20) et située entre le collet (22) et la surface principale de la première plaque, un premier bourrelet annulaire ménagé dans la surface principale de la première plaque métallique et doté d'une saillie s'étendant vers le collet (22) et située dans le plan vertical de projection de ce dernier, et un second bourrelet (42) annulaire ménagé dans la deuxième plaque (16), ledit bourrelet (42) définissant une seconde saillie et un évidement. Cette seconde saillie s'étend vers le collet (22), et l'évidement reçoit par emboîtement la saillie du premier bourrelet (24), les surfaces opposées de la première saillie et de l'évidement coïncidant sensiblement sur toute leur étendue. Les premier et second bourrelets sont entièrement disposés entre la partie retournée et le collet, et se trouvent dans le plan vertical de projection de ce dernier.
