A plastic closure that comprises a closure body having a base wall with a peripheral skirt with threads on the skirt for securing the closure to a container. A liner may be secured to the interior of the closure body, preferably by being compression molded in situ on the base wall. The closure base wall consists essentially of a multiplicity of layers of a matrix polymer material such as PP alternating with a multiplicity of layers of a barrier material such as EVOH to resist transmission of gas, water vapor and/or flavorants through the closure. Layers of a compatibilizer material, such as a maleic anhydride grafted polymer, preferably are disposed between the matrix and barrier layers to tie the matrix polymer material to the barrier material.
