Systems and methods for multi-level, multi-functional stabilization of a spinal column segment are provided. The systems (20) include one or more constructs (22, 122, 222, 322, 422) having a motion preserving portion (40, 140, 240, 340, 440, 540, 640, 740, 840, 860, 870, 880) that permits motion of at least a portion of a vertebral level (11, 17) and a motion preventing portion (50, 250, 350, 450, 550, 650, 750, 850, 865, 875, 885) that substantially prevents motion of at least a portion of a second, adjacent vertebral level (11, 17).
