ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Patterned inhomogeneities of physio-chemical behavior are generated within volumes of material by con- trolled placement of simultaneous and sequential multiphoton absorption. The inhomogeneities are useful in production of variable refractive index optical components, three-dimen- sional photo-resist fabrication, and in the operation of quantum computer storage and retrieval in three-dimensional computer memory systems.
