-22- MULTI-POSITION LATCHING MECHANISM FOR FORCEPS ABSTRACT A latching mechanism for a forceps-type instrument for spacing the jaws of the forceps at one or more predetermined spacing. The latching mechanism includes a latch extending from the inside of one handle and a hook extending from the inside of the other handle. A retainer for the hook is placed on the inside of one of the handles. Springs are used to bias the handles apart in a first position. The hook and the retainer cooperate to place the handles in a second position as the jaws are closed together. The hook and the latch cooperate on further closing and then opening of the handles to recycle the jaws to the first predetermined position without engaging the retainer. COD-88
