ABSTRACT A multi-purpose valve comprises a valve body with inlet and outlet fluid openings and an elongated cylindrical fluid passageway therebetween and in fluid communication therewith. A butterfly type valve member is pivotally supported at its mid- point in the passageway and is swingable between open and closed positions respectively in alignment with and perpendicular to the longitudinal centerline of the passageway. A butterfly type check valve has a portion thereof an overlapping relationship with the first butterfly type valve member to minimize drag as well as the dimension of the two valves in the longitudinal direction. Alternatively, a "barn door" type check valve is provided for swinging movement of its vanes about a common pivot axis adjacent a downstream edge of the first butterfly valve member. Again drag loss is minimized and a highly compact valve assembly is provided. The first butterfly valve member is manually operated and has an associated indicator in the form of a movable pointer on an operating handle and an adjacent fixed scale. Upstream and downstream pressure taps are also provided.
