A nuclear detection system (100) and method efficiently detects contraband, such as explosives, in checked airline baggage or other ob- jects with a high probability of detec- tion (PD) and a low probability of false alarms (PFD). The detection sys- tem includes a source of thermal neu- trons (102, 130); an array of gamma ray detectors (114, 144); a neutron de- tector (146); means for irradiating the object (136, 142,144) being examined to neutrons from the neutron source which neutrons interact with the at- omic nuclei of one more specific elements, e.g., nitrogen, chlorine, or hydrogen present within the object so as to cause elemental-specific gamma rays to be emitted and processing means (116, 154). Elemental-specific gamma rays detect- ed and counted by the gamma ray detectors and processing means allow the approximate origin of the gamma rays within the ob- ject to be determined, thereby providing a rough measure of the density distribution of these specific elements within the object. Neutrons that pass through the object without substantially interacting with atomic nuclei are detected by the neutron detector, thereby providing an image of the atomic density distribution of the object similar to conventional neutron radiography. One em- bodiment of the invention includes an artificial neural system (ANS) for analyzing the recorded gamma rays and efficiently dis- criminating between objects carrying explosives and objects not carrying explosives. Another embodiment utilizes a spectral correlation method (SCM) to remove undesirable background noise from the spectrum of detected gamma rays. Still another em- bodiment uses an X-ray system ( 150) to generate an electron density image of the object being investigated, which electron densi- ty image helps confirm the presence of explosives within the object.
