A fluid filter increases the useful life of the filtered fluid by removing contaminants therefrom, and may optionally provide for in-line delivery of additives to the filtered fluid. The filter may be an oil filter, a fuel filter, or other fluid filter. The fluid filter includes a casing which defines a hollow space therein, a mechanically active filter element within that space, and a chemically active filter element also retained within the hollow space proximate the mechanically active filter element. The chemically active filter element includes a nonwoven web made up of a plurality of fibers. Each fiber has a longitudinally extending internal cavity formed therein, and a corresponding longitudinally extending slot opening from that internal cavity to the outer surface of the fiber. Preferably each fiber has multiple lobes extending radially outwardly from a central stem, and each lobe cooperates with an adjacent lobe to define a longitudinally extending internal cavity and a corresponding slot therebetween. In order to remove contaminants or to supply additives to lubricating oil, the internal cavities, of each of the chemically active filter fibers, are supplied with a chemical reagent therein.

Cette invention concerne un filtre pour liquides qui augmente la durée de vie utile du liquide filtré en retenant les substances contaminantes présentes dans le liquide et qui peut éventuellement assurer l'apport en ligne d'additifs au liquide filtré. Il peut s'agit d'un filtre à huile, d'un filtre à carburant ou de tout autre filtre à liquides. Ce filtre comprend une enveloppe définissant un espace intérieur creux, un élément filtrant à action mécanique logé dans cet espace intérieur, et un élément filtrant à action chimique logé également dans ledit espace intérieur, près de l'élément filtrant à action mécanique. L'élément filtrant à action mécanique comprend une toile non tissée faite d'une pluralité fibres. Chacune des fibres comporte une cavité longitudinale et une ouverture oblongue correspondante dans le sens de la longueur qui va de la cavité intérieure à la surface extérieure de la fibre. Chaque fibre présente de préférence des lobes multiples disposés radialement à partir d'une tige centrale. Chaque lobe coopère avec un lobe adjacent pour définir une cavité intérieure longitudinale et un encoche intermédiaire correspondante. Les cavités intérieures de chacune des fibres du filtre à action chimique renferment un réactif chimique pour l'extraction des substances contaminantes et la fourniture d'additifs pour huile de graissage.
