A multi-user receiver for asynchronous coherent optical pulse code division multiple access (CDMA) systems in fibre optic networking. The receiver includes proper code and phase synchronising combined with interference cancellation. As interference occurs on each desired data bit from two bits of all other users, interference cancellation is achieved through estimation of the random ingredients of all user signals, rebuilding the interference contribution from each bit for all users and removing the contributions from the desired data bit. Interference cancellation is performed in the electrical domain.
