A multi-user speech recognition system includes several speech recognisers which are shared between many user terminals. When a user terminal is activated, one of the recognisers is assigned to deal with voiced instructions received via that user terminal. This recogniser requests the respective "templates" from a memory device. A controller handles requests from the recognisers on a first-come first-served basis, and prevents later requests from interrupting earlier ones.
