MULTI-ZONE FLUIDIZED BED COMBUSTOR AND METHOD OF OPERATING SAME ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A multi-zone fluidized bed combustor and method of operating same in which a plurality of substantially vertical partitions are disposed and arranged in a housing to divide the housing into three or more zones, or chambers. A bed of parti- culate material containing fuel is established in at least two of the chambers and openings are provided in the partitions to permit flow of the material from one of the two chambers to the other and from the latter to a third chamber. Air is passed through the beds to fluidize the particulate material and promote the combustion of the fuel in the two chambers and to cool the material in the third chamber.
