Abstract of the Invention A liquid crystal display system with energizable cell areas distinguishable from deenergized areas by contrasting color illumination from either a wideband back light or ambient front light source. At least one color polarizer is disposed behind the liquid crystal cell and a linear analyzer polarizer is disposed in front of the liquid crystal cell so that the light simulta- neously emanating from the energized and deenergized areas of the display is in contrasting colors and of the same polarity.
